Musk's X Subscription Bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium at $30, Down From $90 Apart
TL;DR
On October 12 SpaceXAI, now posting as SpaceXSI, launched The X Subscription: a single plan that covers the Grok apps, the Cursor code editor and X Premium. Four paid tiers (Plus $8, Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200 a month) draw on one pool of Grok model usage that resets weekly. The $30 Premium tier replaces SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+, which cost $90 a month bought separately. The catch for builders: third-party models in Cursor, meaning Claude and GPT, are not in the pool and bill at API list price from the first token.
What launched
The announcement frames it as housekeeping: "We've unified plans across Grok, Cursor, and X Premium." New customers get the new plans immediately, with a global rollout over the following days. The old plans (SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and friends, X Premium) are closed to new sign-ups. Existing subscribers keep their current price and features until they choose to switch, and SpaceXAI says everyone will eventually be moved, with advance notice and no date.
The tier table, from docs.x.ai:
- Free, $0: daily Grok access, a starter allowance for Cursor coding agents, standard X.
- Plus, $8/month ($80/year): base usage pool, Cursor with Grok models only, a checkmark, creator tools, fewer ads.
- Premium, $30/month ($300/year): 4x the Plus pool, latest Grok models, Cursor cloud agents and automations, code hosting and AI code review, third-party models at API list price, Grok Bot, ad-free scrolling on most surfaces.
- Super, $100/month ($1,000/year): 15x the Plus pool, priority model access at peak times.
- Ultra, $200/month ($2,000/year): 50x the Plus pool, earliest access to new products and models.
Teams get Premium, Super and Ultra at the same per-seat prices (Plus is individual-only), with SSO, admin controls and consolidated billing. Enterprise customers manage Grok and Cursor from one dashboard with one shared pool. cursor.com/pricing already shows the new table; the FAQ there notes the subscription is sold "directly through X Subscription Corp."
The $90 to $30 arithmetic
SpaceXAI's headline number is that Premium bundles plans that "previously" cost $90 a month. The components check out against the pre-launch pricing pages: SuperGrok was $30 on x.ai/pricing, Cursor Pro was $20 on cursor.com, and X Premium+ was $40 on help.x.com.
Look at where the new price points land. Plus at $8 is the old X Premium price. Premium at $30 is the old SuperGrok price. Super at $100 is the old SuperGrok Plus price. Nobody's bill went up on paper; the products attached to each bill multiplied. The Teams story is the same shape: Premium Teams is $30 a seat against Cursor Teams' $40, and SpaceXAI claims 3x the coding usage of the old Cursor Teams plan at that lower price.
Every paid plan, the company says, includes "at least twice as much coding usage" on its own models as the comparable Cursor plan. That is a claim about Grok and Composer usage specifically. Keep reading before you cancel anything.
One pool, weekly resets, and what is not in it
The mechanism underneath all four tiers is a single weekly allowance per seat, spent across the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X, Grok Bot and Cursor. Unused capacity in one product is available to the others. It is one electricity meter for the whole house: the toaster and the dryer both spin it, just at different rates. The usage-limits page says rates "vary by product" and does not publish them, nor the size of the pool in tokens or dollars, nor the reset day. You find out from the live usage view in your dashboard.
The multipliers are published, so the per-unit price is simple division. If Plus buys one unit of pool for $8, Premium buys four for $30 ($7.50 each), Super buys 15 for $100 ($6.67 each) and Ultra buys 50 for $200 ($4 each). Volume discount, heavily tilted toward the top.
Now the part that matters if your Cursor sessions run on Claude or GPT. Third-party models are available on Premium and above, but they are not in the pool. The eligibility page is explicit: they are "billed at API list prices from first use," paid from a prepaid credit balance. Plus does not get them at all; cursor.com says "only Grok models are available" on that tier. So a Premium subscriber who never touches Grok is paying $30 for a checkmark, ad-free scrolling and a prepaid wallet.
The spending controls deserve a careful read before you enable anything. Prepaid credit and the monthly extra-usage cap are separate settings; the cap is unset by default, and "adding prepaid credit does not raise the monthly extra-usage spending cap." Auto Top-up is off until you turn it on. Spend alerts notify, they do not stop work.
Why Cursor is in a social media plan
The short version is ownership. SpaceX closed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor on August 14, folding the editor into the same division that trains Grok and runs X. Two weeks later OpenAI gave notice that it wants to end GPT access inside Cursor, proposing November 12 as the cutoff. The eligibility docs still list GPT as a third-party option, and as of the last public reporting that date was proposed by OpenAI, not agreed. Either way, the economics of this bundle do not depend on GPT: the included usage is Grok, the upsell is Grok, and the only thing a Claude-only user gets from the plan is the wallet.
The bundle also answers a question Cursor's standalone pricing never could: how do you get a casual X subscriber to try a coding agent? Make it free with the checkmark. The $8 Plus tier is X Premium with Grok and a Cursor seat stapled on, and SpaceXAI's own framing to existing Premium subscribers is that they get "Grok and Cursor benefits included for the same price or less." Whether a blue tick converts into developer-tool retention is the bet.
Switching: read the fine print
Nothing moves automatically, but the switch is a one-way door. From the eligibility page:
- Switching cancels eligible Cursor, SuperGrok and paid X Premium subscriptions at checkout and issues a prorated refund for unused time. "The switch is permanent. Support can't reverse it."
- Personal and team accounts unify separately and cannot be combined. Each X account pairs with exactly one Grok account; organisation-managed and affiliate X accounts are not eligible.
- Cursor bought through the Apple App Store is not cancelled or refunded by the switch. You cancel it in iOS Settings yourself and ask Apple for any refund.
- Enterprise contracts, legacy request-based Cursor team plans and invoiced billing are not self-serve; those go through an account team or support.
- Existing Cursor subscribers keep whatever third-party usage their current plan includes until they switch. After the switch, Claude and GPT bill from prepaid credit immediately.
- Annual subscribers keep their paid term; changes land at renewal unless they upgrade.
That last bullet is the one to act on. If your legacy Cursor Pro plan includes third-party model usage you rely on, the switch trades that for a prepaid balance at list price. Run the numbers on your actual model mix before you click. If you live on Grok and Composer, the arithmetic above says Ultra is the cheapest unit of usage SpaceXAI has ever sold.
What is still unpublished
The docs are silent on several things a buyer would want: the size of the weekly pool in tokens or requests, the per-product rate multipliers, the reset day, regional pricing, and App Store pricing. The "4x Plus" multipliers are the only quantitative anchor, and one early teardown makes the obvious point that "4x" does not mean four times as many completed coding jobs if Cursor agent runs draw the meter faster than chat. SpaceXAI's "at least twice the coding usage" claim versus comparable Cursor plans is a vendor comparison with no published denominator. Treat it as a claim until someone measures it.
Key Takeaways
- The X Subscription launched October 12 with tiers at $8, $30, $100 and $200 a month, covering Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium under one bill.
- Premium at $30 replaces SuperGrok ($30), Cursor Pro ($20) and X Premium+ ($40), which were $90 combined; Premium Teams is $30 a seat against Cursor Teams' old $40.
- Usage is one weekly pool per seat shared across Grok and Cursor, at 1x, 4x, 15x and 50x the Plus allowance; per unit, Ultra costs half what Plus does.
- Claude and GPT inside Cursor are excluded from the pool and billed at API list price from the first token via prepaid credit; Plus gets Grok models only.
- Switching from a legacy plan is optional for now, permanent once done, and does not cancel Apple-billed Cursor subscriptions.
- Pool sizes, per-product rates and the reset day are unpublished, so the headline multipliers are the only hard numbers to compare on.
